Failing Hard Drive Symptoms

What's Your Data Worth?

The above image shows a failed hard disk
drive. Here you can clearly see the
Read/Write head has physically
contacted the Platter causing a complete
loss of data!

Such a failure although rare, illustrates
the importance of regular data backups!

Delays or errors while accessing a file.
Standard copy, move or delete operations may produce
prolonged delays as the drive tries to access the data yet
cannot read from the it's platters effectively.

The drive makes unusual or no sounds.
A single knocking or rhythmic "Click, Clock" sounds
are sure signs that a drive is experiencing mechanical
problems. When no sound is heard from the drive there
is also a major mechanical or electrical malfunction.

Boot up error messages
A catastrophic head crash will often be reported with an
error message equal to: "No operating system found" or
"Non system disk". As illustrated in the image at left. A
head crash is a major malfunction of a hard disk drive.

Ever increasing bad sectors
Ever increasing bad sectors found on a hard disk drive are a
sure sign of a hard drives imminent failure. All remaining
readable data should be copied to another storage device    immediately and the failing drive should be replaced
.

  Solutions

Data Recovery
Data recovery from a failed drive is possible as long the drive has not experienced a physical failure of the hardware
itself. Often a hard disk will provide some indication that it is failing, in which case there is usually sufficient time to
recover the data and replace the drive. If you suspect your hard disk drive may be failing please call us immediately
as a delay may increase the total amount of data loss as the drive deteriorates.

Data Restoration
After replacement of the hard disk drive the system must be fully restored using the original media which came with
the computer. Once the system has been fully restored the recovered data is then copied to the new hard disk drive.

Backup strategies
Implementing a backup strategy and executing regularly scheduled backups is an important factor in how quickly an
organization can recover from a severe hardware failure such as a failed hard disk drive. Small businesses are
especially vulnerable to lost productivity as they often lack a good data backup strategy due to the lack of an IT
professional on staff. Whether your a small to medium size business or a single workstation home office we can
design and implement and easy to use backup strategy tailored to your needs. Having a good backup strategy is a
key factor in recovering from a typical hardware failure.

Let Us Help

Recovering from a catastrophic hardware failure is easier when you have a trained professional who has dealt with
hardware failure's and the management of critical data. We can help you thru such a hardware failure or prepare
you and your organization to deal with such an event before it even takes place. By implementing the proper
technologies and procedures we can nearly eliminate recovery time as well as greatly reduce total repair and system
recovery costs.
